13. Eli

I conjure fire in my hands and turn to Misaki. “Get everyone out the chamber. I’m going to kill this bastard.”

“Eli, no!”

Misaki shouts after me, but it’s too late. I’ve already spread my wings and jumped out the cave, heading straight into battle.

I land on the ground, aiming a fireball at White. One hits him full force in the chest, and he flies back, knocking into the wall. His body slumps to the ground, and he appears to be unconscious.

Good. That gives me time.

All around people fall to the floor, squirming and crying in pain as Crystal burns them.

I feel my own skin singe, but I carry on, keeping my eyes on nothing but White.

I knew it... White’s into cleansing...

He makes me physically sick.

Only a few guests remain standing, or the truly ‘enlightened’ ones. Ashley is amongst them. The baby-faced cunt tries to stop me, but I have him on his back in seconds, and he doesn’t wake up.

Fuck, I think I just killed Ashley Fawn, former teen heartthrob and drug addict, but he’s the least of my problems.

I have to get to White before he wakes again.

Black smoke starts to fill the room, and I see Misaki has finally joined me. Though I can’t locate her.

Hopefully, she can get as many people away to safety as possible.

White starts to rise again, his movements sluggish, and I chuckle, unable to believe my luck.

There he is. The bastard who killed my beautiful mother.

And I’m about to burn him to a crisp.

As I walk past the stage, I hear a small whimper and peer down.

One of the tanned girls who’d escorted Crystal cowers beneath the stage, avoiding said angel as she continues to glow.

She looks up then and screams once she meets my black crimson eyes, and my heart wrenches.

Ah, shit. She only looks fourteen.

Believe it or not, scaring kids was not something I like to do.

I’ve been that scared kid once after all. It’s not fun.

I look at White, hearing a small groan coming from his lips, then turn back to the girl.

I can’t leave her. And with the way she holds her leg too, it’s obvious she’s been burnt.

There’s no way she’d survive a battle between myself and White.

She’s an ordinary human and far too young. Not that White cares, the callous beast.

I rush towards her, and she backs away, covering her face. “No, leave me alone!”

“It’s all right. I’m just going to move you out the way.”

She peers up through her shaking fingers, her brown eyes wide and terrified. I bet she never expected to hear a demon speak.

I lift her up, protecting her from Crystal’s light with one of my bat wings, and she turns rigid.

“See? Perfectly safe.”

The girl looks me in the eyes, gazing in awe. She’s employed by White, so I bet she’s been fed all kinds of propaganda about my family, and how we’re all so evil. Well, we are, but still. Her innocent eyes say it all.

“What’s your name?” I start moving away, conscious of White behind me.
